Commercial restroom cleaning checklist

A good commercial restroom checklist is short enough to complete on every visit and specific enough that two people would tick the same boxes. Here's what to include, how often to run it, and how to keep a record you can actually rely on.

The core tasks

These seven tasks cover what visitors notice most. They are the same default tasks CleanLog QR starts every new restroom checklist with — mark the essentials as required and treat the rest as optional.

  • Refill soap dispensers

    Required every visit

  • Wipe sinks and counters

    Required every visit

  • Clean toilets and urinals

    Required every visit

  • Empty waste bins

    Required every visit

  • Mop floors

    Required every visit

  • Restock paper towels and toilet paper

    Required every visit

  • Check mirrors and fixtures

    Optional

Adapt the list to your space: a gym change room might add showers and lockers, a restaurant might add a baby-change station. Keep the total under about ten tasks so checks stay quick.

How often should you check?

High-traffic restrooms

Food courts, gyms and busy restaurants may need a check every 1–2 hours during opening hours. Short, repeatable tasks keep each visit under a few minutes.

Moderate-traffic restrooms

Offices and smaller cafés often settle on a check every 2–4 hours, plus a deeper clean at opening or closing.

Low-traffic facilities

A couple of scheduled checks per day can be enough — as long as staff actually record each visit, so gaps are visible.

Keeping a reliable record

Whether you use paper or a digital log, the record only helps if it's honest and consistent:

  • Record the actual time of each check, not the scheduled time.
  • Have the person who did the work initial or sign off — not a supervisor at the end of the day.
  • Note issues (broken fixture, empty dispenser, damage) the moment they are found, and flag them to a manager.
  • Keep completed records for as long as your business or landlord requires.

Note that any sign-off — paper initials or a digital PIN — is self-recorded by staff. It shows what was reported, not independent proof that cleaning happened.
